BOP Consulting evaluated the UK Global Screen Fund (UKGSF) across a funding period four years, building upon our work on the pilot programme in 2021-2022.

Administered by the British Film Institute and funded by the UK Government’s Department for Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS), the fund aims to strengthen the global reach of the UK screen sector. The UKGSF's focus includes deepening international collaborations, enhancing competitiveness, accelerating export growth, and expanding revenue, audiences, and partnerships for domestic independent businesses.

Through our evaluation we found that the fund’s £15m in funding across 200 businesses and screen projects has resulted in several impacts including:

  • Economic Returns: for every £1 of public funding the fund has generated £22 in net benefit.

  • Filling Strategic Gaps: the fund has played a critical role in addressing market gaps left by the withdrawal of Creative Europe, particularly in international co-productions and business development.

  • Appetite for international growth: there is high demand for the International Business Development (IBD) strand (over 270 applicants to date) across the sector.

These findings highlight the critical role of targeted public policy in driving the international ambitions of the UK screen sector. Moving forward, equipping UK producers with the skills to navigate international markets and embracing innovative business models will be critical to sustaining growth and success.
