The research aimed to uncover how widespread international activity is amongst Arts Council-funded organisations and practitioners (National Portfolio Organisations and grant recipients), the scale and financial value of the activity, where and how it takes place, and what impact it has on a range of non-financial outputs.
Following on from a survey of international activity undertaken in 2014/15, this iteration of the research introduced an international readiness test to determine the capacity of ACE funded organisations to export culture internationally.
Working internationally is demanding for SMEs, with only a fraction currently engaged in exporting. To identify organisations with the potential to take on international endeavours we implemented an international readiness test comprised of the following dimensions:
1. Understanding of international demand.
2. Their work in an international context.
3. Internal expertise and experience.
4. International strategies.
5. Legal and logistical understanding.
Respondents were then provided with an overall ‘score’ to evaluate their capacity and aptitude for international export. The result is an international readiness matrix that can help organisations identify where they might have gaps in knowledge or capacity. For funders, such as Arts Council England, it has developed their understanding of how they can best target their support.
