The UK’s maritime heritage sector faces significant challenges. Our report found that aging infrastructure, limited resources, rising costs for repairs, a shortage of specialised skills, and the impacts of climate change are major concerns. Many vessels urgently require restoration, increasing the need for funding and innovative solutions to support the sector.
Our research provides some considerations not only for maritime heritage but also for the broader heritage sector, which is facing similar challenges balancing preservation with sustainability, addressing the shortage of specialised skills, developing sustainable funding structures, leveraging technology for long-term conservation or in place of physical restoration.
In addition to a set of immediate recommendations and guidance to NHMF, NHS-UK and the National Lottery Heritage Fund to support decision-making around future grant allocation, we identified two possible longer-term actions with potential to address some of the sector’s system challenges:
Developing sector-wide, structural measures to support training programmes and apprenticeships, to address the skills shortage in traditional ship restoration - ensuring the future of the sector.
Connecting support for vessels with support for ‘places’, incorporating investment in local maritime heritage facilities alongside vessels, to address the need for workplaces.
The report also includes a set of detailed case studies of individual vessels. These insights from our research will now inform future heritage preservation policies and strategies, supporting long-term resilience and sustainability in the sector.
