Arts vs creative industries: defining the difference

08 February 2011

Friend of BOP Justin O'Connor is the lead author of a new piece of research for the Australia Council of the Arts. Drawing on a mix of literature review and interviews with creative practitioners, Arts and Creative Industries explores the commonalities and differences between the two terms, before going on to argue that the creative industries concept should be organised around art, media and design. This new model better represents the mixed public/private economy of 'the arts', he believes, and has public policy implications:

For arts and creative industries policy to find its full voice we have to find new ways of indicating success: not just employment, rent increases and tax generation but indexes of well being, creativity, empowerment and diversity. This evidence needs to be extended from individual participations to the wider health of the cultural ecosystem.
